Apparently, there are 100’s of you in the Mid-South that do this.  The phones blew up when I started talking about my “sleep talking” that my wife says I do.

Check out what I found here

And now, as Paul Harvey used to say, “the rest of the story.”

Yes, someone from Memphis is responsible for this Victoria Secret model, Adriana Lima, getting pregnant….

And….it’s not really a true Memphian.  It’s Marko Jarvic from the Memphis Grizzlies.  Shucks.

I looked at the calendar and realized May is almost gone! Almost over….how did this happen? I guess when you have two kids in elementary school coupled with Memphis in May and all the 0ther events going on in this town, it is easy to lose track of time.

Memorial Day weekend is over…I don’t know about you, but I could have used another day off. :) I did get some rest, visited with family. I also got stuck on some of those long weekend tv show marathons. I know I am a few years behind, but after a few back to back hours of Jon and Kate Plus 8, I now have a new TV show to watch. Watching some of the early episodes and comparing it to the premiere this season…wow. What pressure 8 kids and a reality show must put on your life. I know life is tough enough with two kids and a full time job. Up until last night, all the shows I had seen had them making comments on the couch together as if they were a united couple, but It was pretty sad last night. They were each on the couch alone.
Is it the fame?
Is it 8 kids?
Were they already growing apart and it was just time to acknowledge it?
It’s also hard not to compare your own marriage and family life with kids to theirs when you watch…both good and bad.

And as if there was nothing else going on this weekend, the Sci Fi channel had a real blast from the past…a Land of the Lost marathon. Yes, Holly, Will and Dad on a routine expedition….that’s how the song went…..sure it was an attempt to promote the upcoming Will Ferrell movie of the same name. Not sure how that movie will be…how can you duplicate Grumpy, Dopey and Cha-ka? :) And in watching this show from 1974…….is so evident how special effects have changed! The most challenging part was trying to explain the Sleestacks to my kids. :) But what I can’t remember about the show is…how did it end?
Did they ever escape the Land of the Lost?
Did they ever make it home?
Were they ever able to change clothes?
I can’t remember….maybe we’ll find out in the all new high budget movie version of Land of the Lost.
Ah, every thing old is new again. :)

According to this site, it’s the BBQ Shop in Mid-town Memphis!  Many have long thought it to be (if you consider consistency of winning) the 17th Street Bar & Grill in good ole Murpheesboro, IL (what do folks in Illinois know about BBQ?)…  But it’s good question to explore, while eatin’ good!

Check out the site/article when you get a chance…

I had a really great weekend spending time with my family (both sides)… and I’ll share it with you because if you’re ever low on ideas this might help.

First, Saturday spent the day with my father and our friend Bob at BBQ Fest learning and looking at all the cool set-ups.

We then went to the Southland Race Track & Gaming in West Memphis, AR.  Great time.  If you go, always go when they have a simulcast day for Pimlico or one of the big horse races.  More excitement!  Anyway, as soon as we got there I put $3 down on a dog race (exacta – tough bet) and won some money!!!! VERY EXCITING!!!

Saturday night, had a great time in (of all places) Como, MS!!!!  My wife and I drove to Como to the Windy City Grille for a surprise party for my brother in-law Mike.  You may have already been, but for me it was a great “bar and grille” kind of a joint.  Make sure to use the back patio and then get a seat for late night music starting around 9 p.m.  Great food.  Fun location.  You wouldn’t expect it!

By the way… Happy Birthday Mike!

Horseradish Encrusted Grouper from Jarrett’s
(serves 4)

4- 5to6 oz. portions grouper fillet (towel dry)
3 whole eggs (well mixed)
1/2 cup prepared horseradish
1 4oz. pkg panko bread crumbs (found in Asian groceries, Steve says you can get it at Kroger)
pinch of salt and white pepper

Preheat oven to 375

Mix together the eggs, horseradish, salt and pepper. Dredge the fish fillets first in the horseradish mixture, then carefully move the fish to the container of your panko bread crumbs and carefully coat both sides of the fish, (being careful to keep some of the horseradish mixture on the fish.) Remove to a platter or something and refrigerate for 30 min. (this helps the mixture adhere to the fish) Now, in an ovenproof fry pan, heat 3 Tbs. veg. oil and heat to almost the smoking point. Carefully place the fish in the pan and add a walnut sized piece of butter and brown on one side for a couple of minutes. Carefully turn the fish over in the pan and place in oven for 5 or 6 min..
We serve this dish with garlic mashed potatoes and fresh sauteed asparagus.

Crab and Scallion Melt

serves 4
preheat broiler

2 English muffins, split and lightly toasted
crab salad:
8 oz. jumbo lump crab meat
3 or 4 green onions (thinly sliced)
1 small shallots (finely chopped)
1 Tbs red bell pepper (finely chopped)
1 Tbs grn. bell pepper (finely chopped)
1/4 cup mayo
1 Tbs. honey
1 Tbs. whole grain mustard (optional)
1 cup grated Monterrey jack cheese (in all)
salt and pepper to taste
optional ingredients:
alfalfa sprouts
sliced avocado

Mix all the ingredients, and half of the cheese together for the crab salad, and make 4 small piles of the salad on a foil lined cookie sheet. Add the remaining cheese to the top of the piles and place in the broiler.Cook until thoroughly heated and browned on top.
Place some of the sprouts and the sliced avocado (if using) on the muffins. Using a spatula, place the hot crab mixture on top of the avocado and serve with fresh fruit.

Enjoy!

Join me this Friday night (5/8/09) as I emcee a fun cultural event called “Celebrate Chile” (this years Memphis in May honored country)…

The event features the folkloric rhythms of Ballet Folklorico Antumapu from the Universidad de Chile in Santiago at The Rose Theatre at The University of Memphis. The evening will include the national dance of Chile – La Cueca.  Also experience Metahue by Marcelo Peña – the unique sounds of the Mapuche people come to life on stage with Peña’s authentic percussion.  A pretty once in a lifetime cultural experience if you ask me!

Click here to get your tickets and enjoy a fine evening with the great team from Memphis in May and myself…

As a reader of “media” and “hype” and a brief study of “mass media and communication” I realize more and more, that more and more stuff is made up out there.  It’s true.  Trust me, I make up my share of good hearted humorous material to amuse you or the next guy on occasion.

But the truth is, mega stars are the best at it.  For example, there have been reports that Jessica Simpson’s publicity machine initiated the rumors about her “weight gain” because this type of publicity portrays her as the victim, and more like the average person while getting her name “out there” more while she promotes and tours as a new country artist.  Interesting concept.  Brilliant I say!

Michael Jackson’s weird behave?  Sure.  It’s weird.  But….more publicity.

White Stripes….yep. Divorced by the time their big 1999 album hit it big.
